Performance – OST

Stonkingly good period-piece film from 1968 with Mick Jagger and James Fox filmed in and around around Notting Hill before Huw Grant removed the indigenous inhabitants.

The soundtrack’s so outré I’ll talk you through it.


1. Gone Dead Train - A 60’s Stone’s style boogie, vocals by Randy Newman
2. Performance - Weird ambient soundscape
3. Get Away - Ry Cooder’s bottleneck guitar meets Canned Heat
4. Powis Square - More Ry Cooder, if you liked the Paris Texas OST then you’ll like this
5. Rolls Royce And Acid - From the sleeve notes . . . “features flute, calliope and strings in an uneasy collusion, a sui-generis blend beholden to no one style and certainly without comparison at the time it was recorded”. Hmmmmm. “interesting in inverted commas” I’d call it.
6. Dyed, Dead, Red - Buffy Saint-Marie warbles and twangs at a  mouth bow* then someone hits some bits of metal (I kid you not!)
7. Harry Flowers - Lush string intro segues into beautiful kitsch.
8. Memo From Turner - The best unknown, classic-era Stones track. End of. If you’ve never heard it before, it’ll send shivers up your spine.
9. Hashishin - More Ry Cooder and Buffy Saint-Marie, vauguely Middle-Eastern, almost certainly accompanies scenes involving vegetative products imported from Morrocco
10. Wake Up, Niggers - Too much “of it’s time” for me.
11. Poor White Hound Dog - Throw a great soul voice, that piece of board that Rolf Harris used to “play” and some power tools and stir rapidly for a short 3 minutes
12. Natural Magic - Surprised no-one’s ever sampled this.
13. Turner's Murder - "Omen meets Sound Of Music in a gospel style” vocals with an early electronica backing.
