Gong : Gong est Mort . . . Vive Gong - Vinyl Rip

Hippy-dippy wonderfulness from Daevid Allen and chums recorded live at the Paris Hippodrome 28th May 1977 (6 months after Punk kick-started with the Bill Grundy interview btw).

All the gang's here, Gilly Smith, Steve Hillage (with face blanked out from the inner sleeve group photo), Tim Blake (who joined Hawkwind a year or two later), Didier Malherbe, Pierre Moerlen and Mike Howlett who in the weirdness of things, did this . . .

In May, ex-Gong musician Mike Howlett invited Sting and veteran guitarist Andy Summers to form Strontium 90 with him, as a project band for a Gong reunion. The drummer Howlett had in mind for this band, Chris Cutler, was unavailable to play, so Sting brought along Stewart Copeland. Strontium 90 recorded several demo tracks at Virtual Earth Studios, and then performed at a Gong reunion concert in Paris on May 28, 1977. An album with some of these studio and live tracks (with the first recorded version of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic") was released in 1997 under the name Strontium 90: Police Academy. The foursome also performed at a London club as "The Elevators" in July 1977.

Sounds like Paris was the place to be that night!

Anecdotal note : Last saw them supporting The Orb at the Royal Festival Hall in 2001, they totally rocked doing a greatest hits set, the sound was crystal clear and it's the first time in my life I've seen a group get a standing ovation basically for still being alive!
